That dreadful place called the hospital, It was so hard to leave him there

Sitting here, in no way can this place  be called fun. I am beginning to understand why people do not like hospitals. Yes, they are places where the sick or injured come to be healed. Hospitals are meant to be full of joy at the birth of a child,  or extremely sad watching a loved one in pain.

Painful things happen in hospitals. A lot of people do not how what or how their bodies work making things painful and scary. Some people experience trauma or have bad memories or cannot handle the emotions that hospitals bring out in you. Others just do not like pain.

The one I am sitting with loves being at home, in his recliner, his wife in her chair next to him and the dog sitting at his feet. Water glass next to him on the table, watching a crazy comedy on the television. He has his cute little quirky sense of humor. I never know what to expect out of his mouth. He even talks for the dog! It is so funny! She just turns her head side to side looking at him like he is nuts.

 

They want me to place him in a long-term care hospital. I do not feel that is where he needs to be, but I’m not a doctor. In my opinion, that will only make him worse. He needs some rehab. I can see a rehab center.

In the two days I have been with him, he has perked up.  Getting in and out of bed on his own (even when the staff did not want him too) He’s getting adventurous, I just hope he does not hurt himself. I love him so much it hurts. The thought of being without Barry, well, it kills me. We aren’t at the age that this kind of thing is expected. I just feel so very lost.

A: Apple- I love apples. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” I enjoy apples daily. For the old saying to actually work, I’m not sure how many I would need to eat in a day!

B: Barry- I cannot imagine my life without my sweet!

C: Cats- My mother’s cat is cute, but vicious! I do not like that cat!

D: Dogs- Man and woman’s best friend! Our sweet Maggie is part of the family!

E: Easter– The day the Lord rose from his grave.

F: Flowers-I love flowers!

G: Gardening- I enjoy gardening. It is such a joy to watch the plants you put in the ground, come to life. It can be very therapuetic.

H: Hawaii- One place in the USA I’d love to visit.

J: Jack- with my name being Jill, I honestly have never met a Jack I could get along with.

K: Krispy Kreme–A place that would be my second home if it would not make as big as the side of a barn!

My “EEeeeerrrrrry” Phone Call: God works in mysterious ways

Spring

A few years back, just before Barry and I married, I was enjoying my peaceful ride to work. I loved my time alone driving to work. I could crank the radio up or just have peace and quiet. Once I walked in the door at work, chaos always ensued.

I was sitting at a stop-light when my cell phone started ringing. It was a resident at the home I worked for. She wanted me to know that God had just spoken to her and said he was coming for her shortly. She requested that I call her family and get them to the home quickly, she wasn’t sure how much time she had and wanted to say good-bye. She requested I call the Hospice to get them to her bedside.  She then told me to be quick and careful getting to the office, but she needed to hug my neck one last time.

When she hung up, I immediately called the home to get someone to lay eyes on her. After contacting my supervisor, I did everything she asked. I decided to contact her pastor, since he was local.

Everyone made it to the home for a wonderful good-bye. When I arrived, I headed straight for her room. I walked in, sat on the bed next to her. She sat up, wrapped her arms around me and kissed my cheek. She whispered, “Thank you” in my ear and fell back on her pillow. She was gone. Our Heavenly Father had her at His side.

 

Daily Prompt: Tell us something most people probably don’t know about you.

I decided to make a list to share a few things not commonly known about me, as well as a few you should know if you keep up with my blog.

1. We love the Lord and our life as a Christians.

2. We love each other and our family, with all our hearts.

3. We love small town America, but Barry does love the ATL. After working downtown for so long, he learned to love it!

4. I love to read, but have not been able to focus on print since having brain surgery. I love my tablet because I can control the font size.
5. I am learning what it means to get dead-dog tired.
6. We love antiques. They have a mystery about them.

7. We enjoy gardening. Watching something come to life that you planted is an amazing feeling.

8. I’m shy. No really……very shy.

9. I love to draw. At one point, I was pretty good. My disability has effected my drawing capabilities. Barry is an engineer, he can draw anything.

10. I love to sing. I miss singing more than my balance, I think. At church, I just hide in the crowd and let it rip. My disability interfered with my vocal chords taking my ability to sing away. At one point, I was a high soprano. Barry has a gorgeous voice when singing, but I believe he prefers to keep it a secret between his mom and the two of us.

11. My father is gravely ill.

12. I have a genetic disease. My body is prone to form tumors, cancerous or benign.
13. I try not to let my illness interfere with life.
14. We love our sweet puppy-dog! She has saved my life many times.
15. Barry and I are caretakers for my mother. Oh, what a challenge. We always claim we love a good challenge.

16. I’m the middle child of three girls.
17. Barry grew-up an only child.

18. We have one child. Barry’s son, Frank. He hates me. His loss.
19. Barry suffered a large territory right MCA in 12/2011. You cannot tell he had anything happen. He is my miracle.

Daily Prompt: In Good Faith: A brother’s wish

Describe a memory or encounter in which you considered your faith, religion, spirituality — or lack of — for the first time.

During a shift at my first job, I admitted a man to my unit that was in bad shape.  I discovered his admission was at the request of his Hospice,  for pain management. Being a new graduate nurse, you get crazy assignments and tough cases as learning experiences.

I completed the proper paperwork, gave the patient medications his doctor ordered, did what I could to help the family and make them comfortable. I gave the report to my charge nurse and then; started rounds on my other assigned patients.

The supervisor met me in the hallway to tell me of a status change for my new patient. When I returned to his room, I met a representative from his Hospice and he introduced me to the family gathered to say good-bye. My new patient’s diagnosis was End Stage Pancreatic Cancer and his last wishes were to be admitted to Room 434 at the Regional Hospital, where his wife passed away. She died, in 1984, in the same room where he laid dying now.

The Hospice nurse explained his wishes a little better. When his time was close, he requested to be admitted to the hospital for pain management. For about two hours, I played private-duty nurse to his family for whatever need may arise. I tenderly cared for their family member and provided pain management, as ordered, to keep him as comfortable as my capable hands could.

It did not take long for the signs that God was calling him home to show up. His respiration’s were becoming shallow and his heart rate slowing. When the end was upon us, our patient’s brother stepped forward and stated. ” I’d give anything, to see him sit up in bed and take one more breath.”

As in slow motion, my patient slowly, sat up in bed and drew in a long exacerbated breath, fell back on his pillow and was gone. Everyone just looked around the room in amazement. The Good Lord swept in and took him off to be with his wife.

As I watched the family leaving and listened to their stories of this man’s life, I imagined he and his wife walking, hand-in hand, down a beautiful street in heaven.

My faith has always been strong. When it falters just a little, I think back to the 39 years of patients I have cared for and the many unexplained things I have seen. I have no doubt in my mind, there is a God and he is with us always! This story is about my first spiritual encounter. I will never forget the feeling in that room. I left the room full of faith and longing. I get goosebumps, just thinking of that night.

Should we take a vacation or rest and heal?

Having breast cancer is such an issue. To start off, everything is rush, rush, rush to get a diagnosis. They will put you through a mammogram. ultrasound, MRI, and biopsy in one afternoon. Making you think you have some horrible problem that needs to be removed NOW! After all this, they schedule you to see a doctor a few weeks out. They freak you out about the possibility of cancer and then the wait is on.

When you get an actual diagnosis and the rush is back on to see a breast surgeon. You see the doctor and the rush is back on to remove the tumor, at the surgeons convenience. Once that is over, the weight is on again. Then you receive a call and are given date to see oncologist. The Radiation Oncologist at 11am and the Medical oncologist at 3:30pm. All in the same day, but there is no way to get the appointments closer together. After packing for a day at the hospital clinic, we head to the second appointment. They had a no-show and we got in early. It was nice to get in and out of there quickly.

The one thing I didn’t enjoy was listening to the same speech from two different doctors for over an hour each time. One doctor even wanted to know if the other had explained properly a certain lab test that can decide my need for chemotherapy or not and they both asked if the surgeon had gone over anything with me.

Without asking for our response again, We were given  appointments to get ready for radiation treatments, then found out at the next appointment, it would be hurry up and wait for blood-work ordered and a test on the tumor they removed. I feel like I know absolutely nothing about what is going to happen for my treatments. Better yet, I have an idea of the treatment, I just have no clue when the treatments will start. Maybe. by the end of the summer, I’ll have an idea when this will be over.

I have to remember this is in God’s hands and I need not worry. He’ll make sure things are under control. Take one day at a time. In this waiting period, should Barry and I rest and take time to heal or should we take off somewhere?
